Sorry, Dave. I was doing well with this video and it does make a point. But "On Eagles' Wings"...it doesn't matter what sort of version it is..I am crying. We sang this hymn as we processed to Thomas' grave. It doesn't matter that it is a modern hymn, it was chosen for us and now it is tied up so tightly with our memories of Thomas and his death. Yes, modern hymns are awful but they can sometimes take on unexpected value. We sang this hymn at Gerard's funeral too.. so painful to be transported back in time...

I can see the point the guy is making, but it's important to recognise knowing, loving and serving God requires lifting up the heart as well. Some hearts will be touched by one kind of music, even if it doesn't do the same for everyone.

Hi Sue. I am very sorry that you were upset by my post. The intention of the video was to point out that we have such a wealth of traditional Catholic hymns, and yet very often there is a tendency to use those of protestant origin or with perhaps less than ideal theology. It was not intended as an attack on any particular song or person. Of course some music has extra meaning to different people, and some situations tend to have a more personal selection of music. I never intended to take away from that. I do however think the video does have an important message. Please accept my apology and take my post in the spirit in which it was intended. I would never intentionally do something that would cause you or anyone else further grief. You have done a wonderful thing letting people in on your life and I pray that many families are consoled by the support which you have been able to provide.

Thanks Dave. I am not upset with you or your post and there is no need for an apology but I appreciate your concern. I was unexpectedly affected by the video and wanted to share that with you. I agree with you about the wealth of wonderful traditional Catholic hymns. Thank you for your kind words about sharing our grief. God bless.

He didn't do Come As You Are! Though with that voice you wouldn't be shouting for an encore.
There's a quote from Sir Richard Terry who edited the Westminster Hymnal "Of all forms of church music, the one which seems to have wielded an influence out of all due proportion to its intrinsic worth is the vernacular hymn" And he was writing over a hundred years ago.
Thanks for more food for thought, David, Sue and Anthony.
In necessities, unity; in doubtful matters, liberty; in all things, charity.

I've come across some very "theologically exposing" analyses (and sometimes parodies) of "Come as you are" that really put it in a field of its own Veronica.

My best man came up with a parody of it once that had me in tears.
